Grid Segmentation Campaigns And Sampling

Sampling can be applied to any filter or cell row of a campaign.

The options for sampling are:

  • An exact count (enter the number of records required)
  • A percentage invoked by having a percent sign in the sample columns

When using percentage sampling in grid campaigns, the Sample from parent method is used, allowing an unknown quantity to be proportionally split to ensure records are processed.

  • For a top level row, sampling is calculated on the grid's Audience domain.
  • For a child row, sampling is calculated on the child's parent row Net domain.

For example:

In the above example, row 4 has asked the filter row to contain a sample of 1000 records out of the total available records of 250,436.

The filter row is the parent for the child level cell rows, meaning that:

  • Cell row 5 is set to sample 50% of parent records. 50% of 1000 returns 500.
  • Cell row 6 is set to sample 25% of parent records. 25% of 1000 returns 250.
  • Cell row 7 is set to sample 25% of parent records. 25% of 1000 returns 250.

Using N per X in a sample

In the above example, we have asked the filter row to contain a sample of 1000 records out of the total available records of 259,874.

The filter row is the parent for the child level cell rows, meaning that:

  • Cell row 5 is set to sample 50% of parent records. 50% of 1000 returns 500. However, as an N per X of one per household ID has been applied this amends the figure to 449. For more information on how N per X works, see N per X and Grid Campaigns.
  • Cell row 6 is set to sample 25% of parent records. 25% of 1000 returns 250.
  • Cell row 7 is set to sample 25% of parent records. 25% of 1000 returns 250.
  • The total recipients for this example is therefore 949.

Understanding complex sampling

Sampling can be applied to filter rows. When using percentage this will again use 'Sample From Parent'.

For example:

In the above example, we have asked the filter row 4 to contain a sample of 50% records out of the total available records of 259,874.

The filter row is the parent for the child level cell rows, meaning that:

  • Filter row 4 is set to sample 50% of parent records. 50% of 259,874 returns 129,937
  • Child Filter row 5 is set to sample 50% of parent records. 50% of 129,937 returns 64,968
  • Child Cell row 6 shows the cumulative total of what the Cell rows are outputting to a track, 64,968
  • Filter row 7 is set to sample 50% of parent records. 50% of 259,874 returns 129,937
  • Child Filter row 8 is set to sample 50% of parent records. 50% of 129,937 returns 64,968
  • Child Cell row 9 shows the cumulative total of what the Cell rows are outputting to a track, 129,937.
  • Filter row 10 is set to sample 50% of parent records. This returns a Net of 0 as 100% of the parent records have already been sampled in filter rows 4 and 7.
  • Cell row 11 shows the number of records still available as 129,938 as, out of 259,874 only 129,938 have been included for output to a track. As these records are still available it adds them to the cumulative total.

Rounding counts

For example, if both rows 5 and 6 have been asked to sample 50% of 353 records:

  • Row 5 takes 176 records
  • Row 6 takes 177 records.

Row 6 takes 177 as both rows have been asked to sample 50% each of the 353 records.

Over sampling

If you request a higher percentage of the total counts than 100% your row will return zeros, as seen below:
